Friends of the Shenandoah River provides regular accredited E. coli concentration data to assist you in making informed decisions about recreational use of the river. We test for E. coli levels at 12-17 locations each week. Back in the lab, we culture samples and measure E. coli levels — it’s technical, but that’s it in a nutshell.
Typically on Thursdays during the warm weather season, May – September, we post the cumulative testing results to our WaterWatch database and share the results with you on our website and Facebook with a great map, QR codes, pictures, and charts. You can view current and historical readings anytime here.
Want to know before you go? Of course! Using your mobile device, you can view or scan a QR code for recent conditions before heading to the river. Here’s a pro tip: download and print a copy of the QR page or your favorite access code, and keep it in your vehicle. That way, you can see recent conditions whenever the river calls you — no matter where you are!
